So you have a service, and now you need to find clients. Many freelancers turn to marketplace platforms, but how can you find clients without Upwork and other similar websites? I’ve found that for myself and my freelancer clients, creating a well-rounded marketing ecosystem that incorporates a few strategies with consistency is key. Full video here 👇
Optimize Your Website
Your website is the cornerstone of your online presence and should be optimized to attract and convert potential clients. Ensure it is user-friendly, visually appealing, and clearly communicates your services. Additionally, integrating SEO best practices will help your site rank higher on search engines, making it easier for clients to find you. Leverage Professional Directories
Submitting your profile to professional directories is another excellent way to increase your visibility. There are two types of directories you should consider:
- Freelancer Markets: Platforms like Dribbble and Behance allow you to showcase your portfolio to potential clients actively searching for creative talent.
- Straight Directories: These include niche-specific directories such as Creative Lady Directory and Outsourcing with Love, which can connect you with clients looking for your specific skill set.
Regularly updating your profiles on these directories can keep you visible and relevant, potentially leading to more inquiries.
Network and Build Relationships
Building strong professional relationships is crucial for long-term success. Start by optimizing your client referral process:
- Client Referrals: Ensure that your project handoff is seamless and that clients have everything they need. This positive experience will encourage them to refer you to others.
- Adjacent Professionals: Collaborate with other freelancers who offer complementary services. For example, as a website designer, you might team up with graphic designers or copywriters. Offering a referral kickback or a discount code can also incentivize these professionals to refer clients to you.
Networking within local business communities can also yield great results. Reach out to local businesses or agencies and offer your services. You might be surprised at how many opportunities arise from a simple introduction.
Utilize Social Media Wisely
While it’s tempting to try and go viral on social media, this strategy may not be the best use of your time. Instead, focus on creating a baseline presence across platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook. Ensure that all your profiles are optimized and consistent in branding, as this will help reinforce your professional image.
LinkedIn, in particular, can be a powerful tool for freelancers. Make sure your profile is complete, showcasing your work and expanding your connections. The more complete and connected your profile, the more likely you are to appear in searches by potential clients.
Harness the Power of Google Tools
Google Business Profile and Google Search Console are essential tools for improving your online visibility. By utilizing these tools, you can help Google understand what your business is about, making it easier for your site to appear in relevant searches. Don’t forget to optimize your website’s SEO by focusing on keywords that reflect what you do and who you serve.
Participate in Facebook Groups
Engaging in Facebook groups relevant to your niche can be a low-effort, high-reward strategy. These groups are a great place to offer advice, answer questions, and showcase your expertise. The key is consistency—set aside time each week to participate actively in these communities.
Enhance Your SEO
Search engine optimization (SEO) is critical for driving traffic to your website. Make sure your website’s title reflects what potential clients might search for, include relevant keywords in your content, and properly label your images. Regularly updating your site, such as through blog posts, can also help maintain your SEO performance.
Generate Backlinks
Backlinks from reputable sites can significantly boost your SEO. Consider writing guest posts for other websites or collaborating with partners to exchange links. Podcasts can also be a valuable platform to share your expertise and gain backlinks.
Don’t Abandon Upwork
Finally, while this post focuses on finding clients outside of Upwork, you don’t have to abandon the platform completely if you do regularly source clients from there. A hybrid approach is great!
By following these steps, you’ll be able to find clients off Upwork and can build a robust marketing ecosystem that attracts clients from various channels, giving you more control and stability in your freelancing career.
Good luck!

Kara
