How to Get Clients Without Upwork, Part 1

by | Jul 18, 2024 | Business Strategy | 0 comments

Are you tired of relying on Upwork to get you clients? Whether you are a copywriter, digital marketer, fellow website designer, graphic designer, or any other kind of freelancer, there are a TON of ways to get clients without Upwork. Optimizing your website is a crucial step in establishing your online presence and showcasing your services to attract right-fit clients. With a few key changes, your website will become your marketing MVP, a central hub for showcasing your services, and a top-of-funnel asset for new client inquiries. And if you don’t have a website yet, don’t worry! You can implement all of these strategies at your first website build.

Why Your Website Matters

Your website is your digital storefront. It’s the first impression potential clients will have of your business, and it needs to be optimized to convert visitors into clients. An optimized website not only helps you attract clients off Upwork but can also enhance your pitching efforts on Upwork. By linking to a robust, professional website, you save time and words, letting your site do the selling for you.

Essential Elements for Your Portfolio Website

To create an effective website, focus on these key components:

  1. Niche: Narrowing down your niche helps attract the right clients. Identify your ideal client avatar and tailor your content and services to meet their needs. Being specific will help you stand out in a crowded market.
  2. Portfolio: A strong portfolio is crucial. Showcase your best work and include case studies that detail the before and after of your projects. This demonstrates your capability and results, making potential clients more likely to trust and hire you. If you don’t yet have projects to feature, offer to do at least 1 project for free or at low cost to get one — this is an important element for making sales!
  3. Testimonials: Social proof is powerful. Include testimonials from past clients to build credibility. If you’re new, use reviews from your Upwork profile. Or, as mentioned above, offer to do a free or discounted project in return for a testimonial.
  4. Sales Pages: While not essential, sales pages can be very helpful. These pages detail your services, explain your process, and address potential client objections. They serve as a comprehensive guide to what you offer and how you work.
  5. Inquiry Process: Make it easy for clients to contact you. Include multiple ways for potential clients to get in touch, such as booking a call, filling out a form for a quote, or emailing you directly.

Deep Dive into Niching

Niching is more than just knowing your ideal client. It involves understanding your signature process and style.

  • Signature Process: Define a clear, repeatable process for how you work with clients. This includes the deliverables, timeline, touchpoints, collaboration level, and any post-project support. A well-defined process builds confidence and differentiates you from competitors.
  • Signature Style: Your unique style can set you apart. Whether it’s a consistent visual theme for designers or a distinctive tone for copywriters, your signature style (if you have one) should be evident in your portfolio.

Creating a Compelling Portfolio

There are two main styles of portfolios: quantity and quality.

  • Quantity: Showcase the volume of projects you’ve worked on to emphasize experience. This is effective if you have a large body of work.
  • Quality: Highlight your best projects in detail. Case studies are a great way to do this, focusing on the client’s problem, your solution, and the results.

If you do not yet have a lot of portfolio projects, focus on a case-study style portfolio. If you have a lot of projects, I find showcasing the volume of your past projects and highlighting a few featured projects as case studies to be the most effective.

Leveraging Testimonials

Gathering and showcasing testimonials can significantly boost your credibility. Implement a process to collect feedback from every client. If you’re new, use your Upwork reviews. Place testimonials strategically throughout your website and dedicate a section to them.

Building Effective Sales Pages

A well-crafted sales page can guide potential clients through your services, process, and pricing, overcoming objections and encouraging them to take the next step. Include elements like:

  • A compelling headline addressing a common pain point
  • Detailed descriptions of your services
  • Your signature process
  • Social proof and testimonials
  • Portfolio highlights
  • Clear calls to action and contact options

Simplifying the Inquiry Process

Make it easy for potential clients to get in touch by providing multiple contact methods. Options like booking an exploratory call, filling out a quote form, or sending an email ensure that clients can reach you in the way they prefer.

Conclusion

If you want to freelance without relying on Upwork, creating or optimizing your website so that it helps you to attract and win right-fit clients is an important step. By focusing on niching, showcasing your portfolio, leveraging testimonials, building effective sales pages, and simplifying the inquiry process, you can transform your website into a client-converting machine!

Stay tuned for Part 2! Coming next, we’ll dive into the sales systems, proposals, project management, and payment processes that will create a streamlined process for making sales and onboarding clients.

Good luck!

Kara
