Quick video tutorial on how to add Google Analytics to Squarespace 👇
Google Analytics is a must-have for any website. It will help you to see how many visitors are coming to your website each month, where they are coming from, and what devices you they are viewing your content on. It can also tell you how people are using your website: which pages are the most popular and the most common paths people take to get to which page. This is super helpful for determining if your website is doing a good job of getting people to your sales pages, and for determining the most effective marketing strategy.
Step-by-Step Guide to Adding Google Analytics to Your Squarespace Website
Step 1: Access Google Analytics
First, navigate to Google Analytics. You can either type in the URL directly or search for “Google Analytics” on Google. Once there, you’ll be prompted to log in with a Gmail address. This can be a standard Gmail account or an email hosted through Google Workspace. If you don’t have a Google account, you’ll need to create one.
Step 2: Set Up Your Account
After logging in, you’ll see a “Let’s start measuring” button. Click it to begin setting up your account. Here’s what to do next:
- Account Name: Enter your business name.
- Property Name: Use the same name for consistency, e.g., “Kara Ferrera LLC.”
- Business Details: Select the appropriate category and size for your business.
Step 3: Configure Your Property
In the property setup, you’ll be asked about your business goals. Options include generating leads or getting baseline reports. Choose one that best fits your needs and accept the terms to proceed.
Step 4: Set Up Data Collection
You’ll reach a screen prompting you to start collecting data. Select the “Web” platform since we’re setting up for a website. Enter your website URL and name it accordingly.
Step 5: Locate Your Google Tag
After setting up the property, Google Analytics will generate a tag for you. This tag needs to be added to your Squarespace site.
Finding the Tag
The tag will appear as a code snippet that includes a “G-” prefix. If it’s hard to locate, you can close the initial code screen and find the measurement ID directly on your property settings page. There’s a convenient copy button next to the tag.
Step 6: Add the Tag to Squarespace
Now, head over to your Squarespace website:
- Settings: Go to your website settings.
- Developer Tools: Navigate to Developer Tools.
- External API Keys: Select External API Keys.
Here, you’ll find a field for Google Analytics. Paste your copied tag (the G-tag) into this field and save the changes.

Step 7: Verify Data Collection
After adding the tag, return to Google Analytics. It may still indicate that data collection isn’t active immediately. Don’t worry; it usually takes a few hours to start showing activity. Check back within 24 hours to see your traffic data, though it can take up to 48 hours.
Final Thoughts
And that’s it! You’ve successfully set up Google Analytics on your Squarespace website. Monitoring your traffic and user behavior will now be much easier, helping you make informed decisions to grow your business.
Good luck!
Xx,
Kara
