I was recently setting up Google Analytics on a new website. The client already had a Google Analytics account for the old website, so the same tag was going to be used on the new website in order to preserve the continuity of analytics. This tutorial will guide you through the steps to locate your Google Tag in Google Analytics, so you can seamlessly transfer it to your site.
Step-by-Step Guide to Finding Your Google Tag
1. Log In to Your Google Analytics Account
First, you’ll need to log in to your Google Analytics account. You can do this by going to analytics.google.com. Make sure to log in with the email address that your Google Analytics account was set up with.
2. Navigate to the Admin Section
Once logged in, you’ll see a gear icon at the bottom left corner of the screen, which represents the Admin section. Click on this icon.
3. Use the Setup Assistant to Find Your Google Analytics Tag
From the Admin section, the fastest way to find your Google Tag is through the Setup Assistant. Click on “Setup Assistant” to continue.
4. Collect Website and App Data
In the Setup Assistant, look for the option to “Collect website and app data.” If you already have a tag set up, you will find it here.

5. Manage Data Streams
Next, you’ll see the option to manage data streams. Click on “Manage Data Streams” to proceed to the next step.
6. Locate Your Tag
Within the data streams, select the one associated with your website. Here, you’ll find the gtag, which is what Google currently uses as the most current option for tracking. Simply copy the gtag from this section. This will start with a “G-” and is also known as the Measurement ID.
7. Add the Google Tag to Your Website
After copying the gtag, you can add this to your new website. This ensures that your analytics data continues to be tracked correctly on your new site.
Good luck!
Xx,
Kara
