How to Use Tags in ConvertKit to Track Customers

by | May 12, 2022 | Email Marketing | 0 comments

ConvertKit is a great, easy-to-use email management system but it’s a little less robust than some platforms like ActiveCampaign. Not everyone needs an ActiveCampaign though! To get more from ConvertKit and to get it to work a bit like a customer relations management system (CRM), you can use tags!

How to use tags in ConvertKit to track customers (awkward phrasing for SEO!) is fairly simple. I like to have every opt-in or purchase step have its own associated tag – and that way, when you look at a contact, you can easily see EVERYTHING they’ve done with you from calls booked to purchases made.

Written Instructions for How to Use Tags in ConvertKit

How to create tags in ConvertKit

  1. Tags live under your Subscribers section.
  2. Once you click on Grow -> Subscribers, you will see all of your segments and tags to the right of your contacts. You can easily create a new tag by hitting the plus sign beneath your current list.

How to Use Tags in ConvertKit

I like to suggest that you have a tag for every opt-in, product, service or touchpoint (like a free exploratory call). This way you can easily open a contact and see ALL of the activity they have had within your business. This is the PRIMARY function of tags. You can also send a broadcast specifically to all subscribers with a certain tag. This can allow you to target more specifically than a segment. (Note: In the video I say that you can’t email a segment – and you can. I don’t know what I was saying!)

How to Add a Tag to a Contact

The easiest way to add a tag to a contact is to connect that tag to a specific form. You can also configure integrating with scheduling systems like Calendly or carts like WooCommerce so that tags are added for booked appointments or purchases.

To set up the automation:

  1. Go to the Automations tab -> Visual Automations
  2. Create a new automation. Your start trigger for an opt-in will be a form. Select the form associated with the tag.
  3. After the form step, create the step that adds the tag
  4. Don’t forget to drop them into an email sequence that delivers the opt-in too! (For more information on delivering a lead magnet in ConvertKit, head to this post).

That’s it! You’ve set up a tag for your lead magnet. For more specific instructions regarding integrations, stay tuned!

Best of luck! Xx, Kara
