Email marketing is a crucial tool for nurturing leads, engaging your audience, and ultimately growing your business. Automating your email sequences can save time and ensure that your subscribers receive timely and relevant content when they are most excited to hear from you — when they first sign up for your email list! This tutorial goes over how to send a welcome or nurture sequence with Kit (ConvertKit) in 2025.
Why Automate Your Emails?
Automation allows you to send a series of emails to subscribers after they sign up for a form (and for most of you service providers — for a lead magnet). This is ideal for:
- Welcome sequences – Introducing new subscribers to your brand
- Lead magnet delivery – Sending free resources to those who opt-in
- Nurture sequences – Gradually building relationships with potential customers
- Sales funnels – Guiding subscribers toward making a purchase
Step One: Ensure You Have the Right Kit Plan
To create an automated email sequence, you need to have a Creator or paid version of Kit (ConvertKit). The free version does not support advanced automation features.
Step Two: Understanding Kit’s Email Automation Workflow
Kit’s email automation is structured into two main components:
- Sequences – This is where you create the actual emails that will be sent out.
- Visual Automations – This is where you set up the rules that trigger when and how the emails are sent.
Step Three: Creating an Email Sequence
- Navigate to the Sequences tab under the Send menu.
- Click on Create a New Sequence and choose a template.
- Add a subject line and write your email content.
- Adjust the timing for when the email should be sent:
- If it’s a lead magnet email, set it to send immediately (0 days) after sign-up.
- For nurture emails, you can set delays of 1, 3, or more days between emails.
- Optionally, avoid sending emails on weekends by unchecking Saturday and Sunday.
- Continue adding emails to the sequence as needed.
- Ensure each email is published so it will be sent when triggered.
Step Four: Setting Up the Automation
Once your email sequence is ready, you need to create an automation that triggers it:
- Navigate to the Automate tab and select Visual Automations.
- Click New Automation and choose Start from Scratch.
- Set the trigger event, which is typically “Subscriber joins a form”.
- If you haven’t created a form yet, go to the Landing Pages & Forms section and create one.
- (Optional) Add a tagging system to organize subscribers based on their opt-in action.
- Add an Action and select Subscribe to Email Sequence, choosing the sequence you just created.
- You can expand the automation further by adding additional steps, such as follow-ups for those who haven’t taken action.
- Once done, activate the automation.
Step Five: Testing and Optimization
Before launching your automation, it’s important to test it:
- Sign up through your form using a test email to ensure the sequence is working properly.
- Check your Kit analytics to monitor open and click-through rates.
- Optimize your emails over time by tweaking subject lines, adjusting send times, and refining content based on subscriber behavior.
