How to Build a Homepage That Actually Converts (Without Wanting to Cry Into Your Coffee)
Ever feel like designing your homepage is some kind of creative Hunger Games? One minute you’re thinking, “Should I start with my services?” The next you’re second-guessing your hero image like it holds the key to your entire business future.
Sound familiar?
If you’ve been staring at a blank homepage thinking, “What the heck goes here?” — you are so not alone.
But here’s the good news: building a homepage that converts doesn’t require divine inspiration or 17 hours of Canva hacking. It’s more like following a recipe. When you combine the right ingredients in the right order, magic happens.
Let’s walk through the 5 essential homepage sections you actually need (and why they work), so you can stop guessing and start converting. Plus some bonus sections you may want to add into the mix!
Quick video recap of the 5 essential homepage sections with real-life examples here 👇
1. Hero Section: Make a Bold First Impression
Your hero section is like the front door of your digital house. And just like in real life, you want people to feel welcomed, not confused.
✅ Include:
- A clear headline that speaks to your ideal client’s problem + your solution
- A subheadline that expands on how you help
- Tagline: your business in a nutshell
The tagline may come in a section following the hero, but bonus points if you can include it in the hero section or “top-third” (the website real estate that shows before you scroll).
Think of your tagline like your elevator pitch on steroids – short, snappy, and strategic.
Formula: What you do + How you’re different + Who you help
💡 Real Talk: You’ve got about 3 seconds to tell someone they’re in the right place. Make those seconds count with clarity > cleverness.
2. Mini About: Start Building Connection
This isn’t your life story (that’s what your About page is for). Think of this as your “we should totally be working together” pitch.
✅ Keep it under 150 words. Include:
- A quick nod to the problem your visitors are facing
- Your credentials or experience
- A unique nugget about how you work
💡 Example for a designer:
“After designing over 100 personal brands for women founders, I’ve seen what makes people stop scrolling and say, ‘OMG, I need her.’ I help you design a brand that’s as magnetic as you are.”
3. Lead Magnet: Capture Those Emails!
Not everyone’s ready to book you on the spot. That’s why you need a juicy opt-in freebie.
✅ What to include:
- A headline that speaks to a pain point
- A quick description of what they get + how it helps
- A short form (just name + email!)
- A button with clear action: “Send Me the Checklist” > “Submit”
💡 Best freebies are quick wins like checklists, cheat sheets, or video guides that take <30 minutes to consume and deliver real value.
4. Services Overview: What You Actually Offer
This is where you tell people how they can give you money (yay!).
✅ For each service, include:
- A clear, jargon-free title
- A 2–3 sentence summary of what’s included
- Who it’s for + the key transformation
- A call-to-action button (“View Packages,” “Start Your Brand Glow-Up,” etc.)
💡 Pro Tip: Showcase 3–4 signature offers. Use visuals, icons, or cards to make them easy to scan.
5. Social Proof: Build Instant Trust
You could talk about how great you are all day… but a client saying it? Game changer.
✅ Include:
- 1–2 specific testimonials (bonus points for names + faces)
- Recognizable logos or brands you’ve worked with
- Stats or wins if you’ve got ‘em (ex: “Increased traffic by 45% in 3 months”)
💡 Just starting? Use beta tester feedback or kind words from collaborators while you build up!
✨ Bonus Sections You May Want to Feature on Your Homepage
Portfolio or Case Studies: Show Off Strategically
If you’ve got visual work? This is your moment to shine.
✅ Feature 3–6 of your best pieces that attract your dream clients. Include:
- The challenge
- Your approach
- The outcome
💡 No visuals? No problem. Use short case studies or client journeys to show transformation. Think: Before → After.
Blog Posts or Content Sharing
This is where you can reinforce your authority by sharing some of the great blog posts, video tutorials or podasts that you’ve put together.
✅ Be sure to feature your best content:
- 3 posts is plenty
- I suggest picking featured content that highlights your work / areas of expertise the best

Throughout the video up at the top, I walked through a few real-life websites that showcase these elements beautifully, including:
-
Blair Badenhop: Clear messaging, strong visuals, great opt-in.
-
Katie Oglesby: Strong visuals that match her garden-inspired brand, featured services, and a charming email list invite.
-
Heidi (Therapist + Polyamory Coach): Specific hero message, opt-in guide, testimonials, and credentials that build trust.
-
Joanna (Executive Coach): Clean, professional layout with defined services and powerful social proof.
The layouts are different, but the essential ingredients? All there.
TL;DR: Your Homepage Is a Recipe, Not a Mystery
Let go of the pressure to make your homepage a creative masterpiece. It just needs to clearly guide your visitor from “I’m curious” to “I’m clicking that button.”
Your homepage doesn’t have to be flashy or complicated. But it does need to answer the key questions:
✅ What do you do?
✅ Who do you help?
✅ How can they work with you?
✅ Why should they trust you?
✅ How can they stay connected?
Stick to those, and you’ll be in great shape.
