How to Add a Promotional Pop-Up or Announcement Bar in Squarespace (2025 Update)

by | Apr 3, 2025 | SquareSpace | 0 comments

Today, I’ve got a quick tutorial for you that clears up a common point of confusion: how to create a promotional pop-up or announcement bar in Squarespace—because surprise! The Internet changes… all the time. 😅

This is your updated guide, since Squarespace has shuffled a few things around. Let’s get into it.

🎯 Step 1: Where Did “Marketing” Go?

If you’ve watched one of my older tutorials, you might be wondering, “Where did the marketing tab go?”

You’re not losing your mind—Squarespace moved the marketing tools! So don’t go looking in the main menu on the left—it’s not there anymore.

Instead:

  1. Go to Pages in your main menu.
  2. Scroll all the way down to Website Tools.

Voilà! You’ll find the Announcement Bar and Promotional Pop-Up settings right there.

📢 Option A: Using the Announcement Bar

The Announcement Bar is a sleek little bar that sits at the top of your website. It’s great for promoting:

  • A limited-time offer
  • An important update
  • A free resource or lead magnet

Why I love it for service providers: it’s simple and not too intrusive—especially helpful if you’re not offering a discount code or trying to make a retail-style push.

Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Go to Website Tools > Announcement Bar
  2. Toggle it on
  3. Enter your message (e.g., “Free masterclass this Friday!”)
  4. Add a link (so they can click and learn more!)
  5. Bonus: You can style it to match your brand.

💥 Option B: Setting Up a Promotional Pop-Up

Pop-ups are still around, but they’re a bit more nuanced. I only recommend using them if:

  • You have urgent info to share
  • Your audience already knows you (a.k.a. warm traffic)
  • You’re offering something truly compelling (like a discount or exclusive offer)

To set it up:

  1. Go to Website Tools > Promotional Pop-Up
  2. Toggle it on
  3. Customize the content:
  4. Headline
  5. Body text
  6. Button and destination link
  7. Choose the action, like: Go to a page, Register for something, Sign up for your newsletter
  8. Set the display timing—just a heads up: showing it immediately can annoy cold visitors 😬
  9. You can also upload an image and customize the pop-up style to fit your brand.

📝 Final Tips

Don’t forget to toggle ON the feature once you’re happy with how it looks!

If something seems off or glitchy, try refreshing—Squarespace can be a little moody sometimes.

Not sure which to use? Start with the announcement bar—it’s user-friendly and gets the job done without being pushy.

Hope this was helpful! 💛
