5 Things Your Website Should Be Doing for Your Business (…And Probably Isn’t)

A lot of business owners think once they “have a website,” they have an online business.

And while yes—having a website is an important step—it’s really just one piece of the puzzle.

As a website designer and strategist, I see this all the time with my 1:1 clients: they invest in a beautiful website, launch it, and then… nothing.

No leads.
No inquiries.
No sales.

Not because their business isn’t good.
Not because people don’t need what they offer.

But because their website isn’t actually working for them.

Your website shouldn’t just sit there looking pretty. It should function as part of your marketing and sales system: helping you attract the right people, guide them through your offers, and convert them into leads or clients.

Let’s talk about the five things your website should be doing for your business—and probably isn’t yet.

1. Your Website Should Be Building Your Email List

One of the biggest mistakes I see? Websites that collect zero contact information.

Business owners spend time driving traffic from Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, podcasts, networking, or Google… only to let those visitors leave without any way to stay connected.

The truth is: most people are not going to buy the first time they visit your site.

That’s why building your email list matters.

Email marketing gives you the chance to nurture potential clients over time, build trust, and stay top of mind until they’re ready to buy.

Focus on:

✅ Creating a quality lead magnet that solves a specific problem
(Instead of a vague “Join my newsletter.”)

Examples:

  • A checklist
  • A free training
  • A guide
  • A quiz
  • A template

✅ Placing opt-ins strategically throughout your site

Not just once in your footer.

Try adding them:

  • On your homepage
  • Within blog posts
  • On your about page
  • As a pop-up (exit-intent recommended – don’t pop too soon!)
  • On your resources page

Your traffic is valuable—don’t waste it.

2. Your Website Should Help Qualify Your Leads

A lot of people focus only on attracting clients.

But a strategic website also helps filter out the wrong ones.

This is one of the most underrated ways to save time in your business.

Your website copy should clearly communicate:

✔ Who you help
✔ How you help them
✔ What your process looks like
✔ What type of client gets the best results
✔ Who may not be a fit

That doesn’t mean being rude or exclusionary.

It just means being clear.

When your website is vague, you’ll get more “just curious” inquiries, price shoppers, and people who aren’t aligned with your offers.

When your messaging is clear, you get better-fit leads and spend less time on sales calls that go nowhere.

3. Your Website Should Position You as an Authority

If your website sounds like everyone else in your niche… it’s not doing enough.

Your site should help people land on your page and immediately think:

“Oh, this person knows exactly what they’re talking about.”

That happens through strong messaging, strategic content, and brand presence.

Common mistakes I see:

🚫 Generic messaging that could apply to anyone

Examples like:

  • “Helping women live their best lives”
  • “Empowering entrepreneurs”
  • “Transforming your mindset”

These aren’t wrong… but they aren’t memorable, and don’t share your unique POV.

🚫 Playing it safe instead of sharing your perspective

People want to know:

  • What makes your approach different
  • Why you believe what you believe
  • Your unique process or philosophy

🚫 Using only stock photos

Especially if you’re a coach, consultant, or service provider.

People buy from people.

Your website should feature:

  • Your face
  • Your story
  • Your voice
  • Your expertise

This builds trust faster.

4. Your Website Should Be Generating Sales

Your website should not just “tell people about your offers.”

It should help sell them.

That doesn’t mean every visitor will buy immediately.

But your site should be warming people up enough to either:

✔ Make a purchase
✔ Book a sales call
✔ Submit an inquiry
✔ Take the next step

One of the biggest issues I see?

Sales pages with not enough information.

Business owners are often afraid of “too much copy,” so they leave out important details.

Visitors are left wondering:

  • Is this for me?
  • What exactly do I get?
  • How does it work?
  • Why should I trust this?
  • What happens next?

Your sales page should answer objections before someone has to ask.

The right combination of:

✨ Messaging
✨ Strategy
✨ Design
✨ Social proof
✨ Clear calls to action

…leads to more conversions.

And yes—you probably need more information on your sales page than you think.

5. Your Website Should Be Getting People to Stay

Traffic means very little if people bounce immediately.

You can have the prettiest website in the world…

But if visitors leave after five seconds, something isn’t working.

This is where data matters.

Instead of guessing what’s wrong, check your analytics.

I always recommend using Google Analytics and Google Search Console to understand what’s happening on your site.

Look at things like:

📊 Bounce rate
📊 Average time on page
📊 Top-performing pages
📊 Exit pages
📊 User journey paths

Ask questions like:

  • Are people landing on the wrong page?
  • Is the messaging unclear?
  • Is the design overwhelming?
  • Are pages loading slowly?
  • Are calls to action hard to find?

Then fix what’s actually happening—not what you assume is happening.

Your analytics tell a story.

Learn to read it.

Your Website Isn’t Just a Digital Brochure—It’s a System

A good-looking website is great.

A strategic website? That changes your business.

Your website should be attracting leads, nurturing trust, qualifying visitors, and generating sales while you sleep.

If it’s not doing those things, the problem usually isn’t that you “need more traffic.”

It’s that the traffic you’re getting isn’t being guided well.

The good news? With the right strategy, messaging, and systems, your website can become one of the hardest-working tools in your business.
