How to Get Started in Kit (Formerly ConvertKit)

by | Jan 9, 2025 | Email Marketing | 0 comments

When you start email marketing with Kit, you’ll want to make sure that your sending email address is set up correctly. There are also a few basics in any email marketing account that you may want to set up, like programming the delivery of a lead magnet. Basic set up in Kit is covered in this tutorial 👇

Step 1: Create Your Kit Account

Getting started is simple. Visit kit.com* and sign up for an account. Kit offers a 14-day free trial, giving you plenty of time to explore its features. Depending on your needs, you can continue with the free plan or upgrade to a paid one. One of the biggest upsides to Kit for just starting out entrepreneurs is that you can actually send a lead magnet in the free plan.

Once logged in, you’ll see the main dashboard.

Step 2: Set Up Your Email Sending Options

To send emails, you’ll need to verify your email address. Follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings > Email Sending Options.
  2. Add your email address and verify it by clicking the confirmation link sent to your inbox.
  3. Use a professional business email address, as it’s essential for email marketing. If you don’t have one, you can set one up through your hosting provider or Google Workspace for a small monthly fee.

Step 3: Create an Opt-In Form

Forms are vital for growing your email list. Here’s how to create one:

  1. Navigate to Landing Pages and Forms.
  2. Choose “Form” if you have a website. For embedding, select the “Inline” form template.
  3. Customize the form fields. While the default is “Email Address,” you can add fields like “Full Name” for better personalization.
  4. Once designed, publish the form and embed it on your website. Here is a tutorial for embedding on a Squarespace website. And here is one for WordPress with Divi theme.

Step 4: Deliver a Lead Magnet

There are two ways to automate the delivery of a lead magnet. Here is how to do it without the automations section:

  1. In the form settings, go to the Incentive section.
  2. Enable the Send Incentive Email option.
  3. Upload your lead magnet file (e.g., a PDF) or link to a download page.
  4. Customize the incentive email to include a welcome message and instructions for accessing the lead magnet.
  5. Save your changes and test the process to ensure smooth delivery.

Step 5: Send Broadcast Emails

The broadcast feature lets you send newsletters or updates to your subscribers. To create a broadcast:

  1. Go to Broadcasts and start a new campaign.
  2. Choose a template or start from scratch. Templates with images and text are great for visually appealing emails.
  3. Customize the email, set a subject line, and select your audience (all subscribers or a specific segment).
  4. Preview and send your email.

With these steps, you’re ready to start using Kit to grow your email list, engage your audience, and automate your marketing efforts.
