How to Customize Squarespace Templates

by | Feb 9, 2022 | SquareSpace, Web Design | 0 comments

Images are (obviously) and important part of your site design – and how you incorporate them into your site can make a big difference. If you have a Squarespace site, they offer you a bunch of different options – so this is how to use different Squarespace image styles: how to add them to your site, and how to style them.

Written Instructions for How to Customize Squarespace Templates:

How to select a Squarespace template:

I actually don’t think that the template that you start off with is all that important. You should really be able to customize everything that you want to!

That said, if you’re crunched for time or nervous about your DIY skills, here are some tips:

  1. Pick something intended for your industry. I’ll be honest that Squarespace’s templates are designed with more emphasis on beauty than strategy, but picking something made for your industry will give you better page templates.
  2. Pick something with colors and fonts that you like – then you won’t have to bother changing them! (But, don’t worry if you can’t find something that you love, since these things are totally editable).

Once you have your template selected, you can alter page section backgrounds:

The settings for each section can be found in the top right of that section – you’ll have to hover over the corner in order to see the controls.

When you click on the pencil icon, the window that opens up features a Background tab, where you can change (or remove) the background image. In the Colors tab you can select different color palettes. Color palettes will apply to background images if you’re using one – the text color and image overlay tone will change. (See video for clearer explanation).

How to add and move elements in sections:

If you need to add or move things within a section, you simply need to move your cursor around and click on “+” signs when they appear. This will open a window that offers you the option to add different items (image, video, etc).

In order to move something, you will click and hold the element in order to drag it. Pay attention to the blue lines that appear – these demonstrate where the element will be placed. Again – the video demonstrates this clearly, so please refer to it if confused 🧐.
